Immunocytochemical examination of immune cells in periapical granulomata and odontogenic cysts

Abstract: AT. Immunocytochemical examination of immune cells in periapical granulomata and odontogenic cysts. J Oral Pathol 1988: 17: 84-90. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were used to determine the presence and distribution of immune cells including lymphocytes, macrophages and Langerhans cells, in normal periodontal ligament, periapical granulomata, periapical cysts and dental developmental cysts. Isolated T-lymphocytes, but not B-lymphocytes, were detected in specimens of non-inflamed periodontal ligament. Increased… Show more

“…These results show that the epithelial cells of ERM and the surrounding immunopositive cells most probably communicate with each other, as well as with the surrounding fibroblasts (Gao et al, 1988;Má rton et al, 1998;Götz et al, 2003;Shimonishi et al, 2005). The epithelial-mesenchymal interaction indicated in the present study suggests a functional property for the cells comprising the ERM clusters.…”

“…The epithelial-mesenchymal interaction indicated in the present study suggests a functional property for the cells comprising the ERM clusters. Cementum formation and repair (Brice et al, 1991;Hasegawa et al, 2003), as well as immune-defense properties and formation of periapical granulomata and odontogenic cysts (Gao et al, 1988) have been reported previously.…”

“…The up-regulation of class II MHC correlates with APC activity (25,26). In humans, CD83 expression is a hallmark of mature DCs (27) and activated DCs (28). CD86 (B7-2) plays a major role in T-cell activation (29).…”

“…Introduction T-and B-lymphocytes comprise a large proportion of inflammatory cells in human periapical lesions (Cymerman et al, 1984;Nilsen et al, 1984;Torabinejad and Kettering, 1985;Gao et al, 1988;Lukic et al, 1990). Furthermore, Tlymphocyte presence in periapical lesions correlates with lesion size (Matsuo et al, 1992).…”
