Immunocytochemical Localization of Endocrine, Paracrine and Neurocrine Cells in the Avian Pancreas

The distribution of Immunoreactive (IR) endocrine (G-cell), pamcrine (D-cell) andneumrine (VIP-) cell types were investigated in the avian (Callus gallus) pancreas. Sections were immunaytochemicully stained by avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) technique utilizingantisem togastrin (SHGI: 2-1 7), Somatostatin @OM: 15-28) and vasoactive-intestinal p p t i d e (VIP : 14-28) with DABTH yielding reddish brown colour. G-cells were larrted both in acinar tissue and in the islets of dorsal, ventml and splenic pancreatic lobes. D-cells with blunt cytoplasmic prvcesses (Pamcrine) were found at the islet peripkry. VIP-nerve fibers were found innervating both the exocrine and the endocrine portions and the blood vessels. Thissuggests thelocal releaseofneuronal VIPthat stimulates pancreatic secretion. These investigations are helpful in establishing theanatomical relationship between hormone peptides and their interactions in the pancreas.
