We have developed an ELISA for IgM and IgG antibodies to the core glycolipid (CGL) of the Re mutant Salmonella minnesota R 595, and to lipid A. Anti-CGL antibodies have been detected in sera from 37% of healthy blood donors, whereas anti-lipid A activities were found in 13% of individuals only. The anti-CGL and anti-lipid A activities were examined in patients in a surgical intensive care unit, selected on the basis of a definite risk of infectious complications due to Gram-negative bacteria. Of the patients who developed such infections, the rate of favourable outcome was significantly higher in patients with either stable positive or increasing anti-CGL activities than in patients found to be negative. Our results provide clear evidence that anti-CGL antibodies contribute to host defence against various Gram-negative bacteria.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), a diverse group of marine and freshwater microorganisms, have attracted the scientific community’s attention since their discovery. These bacteria biomineralize ferrimagnetic nanocrystals, the magnetosomes, or biological magnetic nanoparticles (BMNs), in a single or multiple chain(s) within the cell. As a result, cells experience an optimized magnetic dipolar moment responsible for a passive alignment along the lines of the geomagnetic field. Advances in MTB cultivation and BMN isolation have contributed to the expansion of the biotechnological potential of MTB in recent decades. Several studies with mass-cultured MTB expanded the possibilities of using purified nanocrystals and whole cells in nano- and biotechnology. Freshwater MTB were primarily investigated in scaling up processes for the production of BMNs. However, marine MTB have the potential to overcome freshwater species applications due to the putative high efficiency of their BMNs in capturing molecules. Regarding the use of MTB or BMNs in different approaches, the application of BMNs in biomedicine remains the focus of most studies, but their application is not restricted to this field. In recent years, environment monitoring and recovery, engineering applications, wastewater treatment, and industrial processes have benefited from MTB-based biotechnologies. This review explores the advances in MTB large-scale cultivation and the consequent development of innovative tools or processes.

Antibody titres to core lipopolysaccharides in horses with gastrointestinal disorders which cause colic

Summary Serum immunoglobulin (Ig) titres to core lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were determined in 102 horses admitted to a university referral hospital during a 12‐month period for evaluation of colic. Serum samples were collected again 10–14 days later from 84 of the horses. Titres to core LPS were quantitated by an indirect enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), utilising the J‐5 mutant of Escherichia coli 0111:B4 as the solid‐phase antigen. All horses had natural antibodies to core LPS at the time of admission and the titre was not affected significantly by age, sex or type of gastrointestinal disorder. The geometric mean titres to core LPS increased significantly within 14 days of admission in those horses with large colon displacement (25), ileal impaction (13), small intestinal strangulating obstruction (11) and small colon obstruction (4). Twenty four (28.6 per cent) of the horses had at least a 4‐fold rise in titre (seroconversion) to core LPS within 14 days of admission. The incidence of seroconversion to core LPS was significantly greater (P<0.05) in horses with disorders requiring surgical intervention (35.8 per cent) than in those with disorders (proximal enteritis, colitis, large colon impaction and unknown) which only required medical treatment (16.1 per cent). Seroconversion rate was not statistically different between groups of horses with diseases of the small intestine which required surgical or medical treatments. The results of this study indicate that gastrointestinal disorders that cause colic in horses result in IgG production to core LPS, and the latter is more prevalent in disorders requiring surgery.
