Immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G antibodies against β‐lactoglobulin and gliadin at age 1 associate with immunoglobulin E sensitization at age 6

Abstract: Increased IgA or IgG against BLG or gliadin at age 1 was associated with IgE sensitization at age 6. We suggest that an enhanced antibody response to food antigens reflects mucosal tolerance aberrancies, e.g., altered microbiota and/or increased gut permeability, which is later seen as sensitization to allergens.

“…Our systematic observations have been anticipated by studies limited to a few allergenic molecules. 13,14,18,20,29,30 Among Swedish children, allergic sensitization or symptoms correlated with high levels of IgG responses to ovalbumin, birch, and cat, 29 and IgG levels to b-lactoglobulin were greater in patients with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis than in control subjects. 30 In Finnish children IgG responses to ovalbumin were associated with allergic disorders.…”

“…Accordingly, it has been previously proposed that high levels of IgG to some allergens early in life might predict the development of IgE sensitization later in life. 20,21,38 Therefore this area of investigation is very complex, and further studies are now needed to define how default and preatopic IgG responses can be better discriminated.…”

“…Explanation. Primary prevention: the increase of IgA levels with breast milk 30 and the use of milk hydrolyzed formulas in high-risk infants reduced the cumulative prevalence of eczema. 31 Although these results are supported by some studies, other research studies do not reproduce these results, so their implementation cannot be widely recommended.…”
