Immunohistochemical characteristics of basal-like breast cancer

Abstract: Basal-like breast cancer (BLBC) occurs mainly in young patients. It is characterized by an aggressive clinical outcome, presence of distant metastases, particularly within the first five years of the disease, bad prognosis and relatively high mortality. Recently greater interest of scientists in this subtype of breast cancer has been observed. Despite such many well-known potential biomarkers of BLBC, currently there is no official international panel of antigens dedicated to diagnosis of this subtype of breas… Show more

“…7I and J and Supplementary Table S4). This suggests that the control of ∆Np63 by TGFβ could be more relevant in breast cancers with low levels of ∆Np63 (luminal subtype) than in those with high levels of ∆Np63 (basal subtype) (39)(40)(41)(42). In summary, these data demonstate a negative correlation between TGFβ and ΔNp63 signatures in subtypes of breast and lung tumors, further providing evidence for the regulatory axis of TGFβ/ΔNp63 in human cancers.…”

“…1D ). However, basal-like breast cancer could predict bad prognosis, as 75–80% of the triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) belonged to the group of basal-like breast cancer ( 20 ). High levels of CXXC5 expression could predict a bad prognosis in TNBC with MR via CXXC5 univariate Cox analysis (basal-like and/or TNBC) but not in the other group ( Tables II and III ).…”

“…So differentiating BBC from NBC shows great significance in clinical work. Basal-like breast cancers are those which expressing both CK5/6 and EGFR, higher CK5/6 and EGFR expression demonstrated significantly more often central nervous system and lung recurrence but very rarely to the bones and liver [ 34 ]. BBCs always have poor prognosis, and are difficult in treatment because of lacking effective targeted therapies [ 17 18 , 35 ] However, BBCs respond to chemotherapy using anthracyclines and taxanes fortunately [ 19 ].…”
