Immunohistochemical Demonstration of S-100 Protein in Epithelial Cells of Bovine Oviduct

Abstract: The present study deals with an immunohistochemical localization of S-100 protein in the bovine oviduct. The epithelium of the infundibulum, ampulla and isthmus showed a positive staining for S-100 protein. The immunoreactivity for S-100 was observed both in the ciliated and nonciliated (secretory) cells of the oviductal epithelium at any stages of the estrous cycle. The immunoreactivity was also found in nervous elements and endothelial cells of blood vessels. No cell outside these cells showed any immunoreac… Show more

“…They also suggested that S-100 varies among different species rather than among different tissues of a given species. Although the presence of S-100 in the bovine Fallopian tube was shown by Kamiya et al (1989), the subunit distribution and the heterogeneity of the epithelial cell population observed in the present study was not examined in detail. In agreement with the results of Kamiya et al (1989), we found that the cytoplasm of non-ciliated cells of the ampulla and of fimbriae was diffusely positive for S-100a(a~) and S-100~ during the whole oestrous cycle.…”

“…The different labelling results with anti-S-100a(R~) or [3 obtained by Kamiya et al (1989) in non-ciliated cells in the isthmus may be explained by the use of different antibodies (different source) or by differences in sampling: as the isthmus epithelial lining merges into the S-100-negative uterus epithelium gradually, the site of sample collection could be crucial.…”

“…S100 proteins have been implicated in a variety of intracellular and extracellular functions (Heizmann et al 2002;Donato 2003). In the oviduct, these proteins were linked with epithelial cells (Kamiya et al 1989). Acetylated a-tubulin is present in various microtubule structures.…”
