Immunohistochemical Detection of Female Sex Hormone Receptors in Meningiomas

Abstract: Sixty-one meningiomas from 60 patients were screened for estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors (PgR) with monoclonal antibodies in an immunohistochemical assay. In addition, 43 of the cases were evaluated for tumor size and peritumoral edema, as seen on computed tomographic scans and magnetic resonance images. Sixty-one percent of the tumors contained significant amounts of PgR, whereas no estrogen receptor-positive tumor was observed. Thirteen percent of all tumors were classified as nonbenign variant… Show more

“…10) The progesterone receptor is expressed in 61% to 95% of meningiomas, and the estrogen receptor in 0% to 8.6% of the tumor. 1,9,20) Based on the reported relationship between the progesterone receptor expression and a good prognosis, hormonal therapy has been tried for the treatment of meningiomas. 9) Endocrine manipulation of meningiomas in vitro was mainly attempted using medroxyprogesterone acetate as an agonist of the progesterone receptor in the 1980s, [13][14][15]22) but no clinical efficacy could be confirmed.…”

“…11) Previous studies have reported the expression of sex hormone receptors in meningiomas. 1,9,20) Meningiomas reportedly enlarge when the serum levels of progesterone are elevated during pregnancy or the luteral phase of menstrual cycle in women. 9) Here we report a male patient with spontaneous regression of an asymptomatic meningioma associated with discontinuation of progesterone agonist administration that he was receiving for the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy.…”

“…Brandis et al 28 studied 53 typical tumors and 8 non-typical and found differences only for men. Recently, Hsu et al 9 suggested that absence of PR, high mitotic index and higher tumor grade were significant factors for shorter disease-free interval and that the presence of PR, even in a small number of tumor cells, is a favorable prognostic factor for meningiomas.…”
