Immunohistochemical differentiation of metastases of renal carcinomas versus other carcinomas with anti‐γGT monoclonal antibody 138H11

Abstract: The data suggest that mAb 138H11 is useful for the immunohistochemical differentiation of RCC from other metastatic adenocarcinomas if the primary site of the tumour is not known.

“…These surfaces are usually not connected to the circulation. In contrast, GGT is expressed over the entire cell surface in RCC ( Fischer and Scherberich, 1996 ; Kaufmann et al , 1997 ) and is therefore accessible through the circulation. This may subsequently lead to elevated serum levels of GGT and higher intracellular levels of GSH ( Lusini et al , 2001 ), which correlate with the tumour burden.…”

“…[22] Vimentin is typically expressed by RCC, but negative in most pancreatic adenocarcinomas. [23] Immunostains can also distinguish RCC from ambiguous neuroendocrine tumors (positive for synaptophysin, CD56, and chromogranin) and PEComas (positive for HMB45). The papillary subtype of RCC, frequently seen accompanied by foamy macrophages and fibrovascular cores, is also a potential pitfall.…”

“…The finding here of less TERT staining in lymphoma lymph nodes compared to normal lymph nodes was unexpected, in that tissues with TA should have readily detectable TERT expression. The small sample size or difficulties encountered in the quantification of results may be responsible for this (Kaufmann et al ., 1997; Shi et al ., 2001). It is also possible that the method of antigen retrieval chosen, citrate buffer, was not adequate to restore the protein's native configuration and allow positive results in all samples (Shi et al ., 2001).…”
