Immunohistochemical expression of nuclear factor κB, matrix metalloproteinase 9, and endoglin (CD105) in odontogenic keratocysts, dentigerous cysts, and radicular cysts

Abstract: The results suggest that the more aggressive biologic behavior of OKCs is related to the higher expression of MMP-9 and NF-κB in those lesions. The differences in the biologic behavior of the lesions studied do not seem to be associated with the angiogenic index.

“…The developmental mechanisms of these odontogenic lesions may be related to MMP expression (28). Increased expression of MMP-9 in KOTs compared to other odontogenic cysts has been demonstrated by previous studies (28)(29)(30). Our results showed significantly higherMMP-l and -9 expression in KOTs compared to RCs and DCs, while there was no significant difference in MMP -1 and -9 expression between KOTs andABLs.…”

“…MMPs are also connected to several other bone destructive conditions [3,6,13,14]. Lately, it has been noted that proliferation and expansion of cyst epithelium is greatly influenced by the inflammatory response [16].…”

“…Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) are a large family of enzymes which take part in many proteolysis associated pathological conditions [3]. Role of MMPs and their tissue inhibitors has also been associated to several different cysts types found in maxillofacial region, including follicular cysts [4][5][6]. However, all the mechanisms how the cyst develops and eventually destructs the bone have not been completely clarified.…”
