Immunohistochemical Profile of Endometrial Adenocarcinoma: A Study of 61 Cases and Review of the Literature

Abstract: The differences in immunohistochemical expression of p53, bcl-2, bax, estrogen receptor (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR) were evaluated in 40 endometrioid and 21 papillary serous carcinomas of endometrium and correlated with known predictors of survival, such as grade and stage. Uterine papillary serous adenocarcinomas (UPSA) showed significantly higher p53 expression than did uterine endometrioid adenocarcinomas (UEA) (76.2% versus 35%), whereas both ER and PR were more often positive in endometrioid than… Show more

“…27,28 In the present study also, all the five cases of serous carcinomas which were analysed, were ER and PR negative ( Figure 5). Hence, it suggests that the immunohistochemical analysis of endometrial carcinoma differentiates between different grades and histological types, thus being useful in the distinction of high risk cases.…”

“…1 Development of endometrial adenocarcinoma is at least partially associated with the influence of unopposed estrogen, resulting in uncontrolled proliferation. 2 Apoptosis is a physiologic mechanism of cell death that has been shown to play a role in the onset and/or development of cancer. 3 Defects in the cellular program that control apoptosis can lead to disturbances in tissue homeostasis, i.e., balance of cell proliferation and cell death.…”

“…Expression levels of ER and PgR are reported to be correlated with a favorable prognosis of endometrioid adenocarcinoma (13,17), although the level of CDCP1 expression was not correlated with those of ER and PgR expressions. ER and PgR might not regulate CDCP1 expression.…”
