Pollution with heavy metal salts is an important environmental problem today, having an adverse effect on public health. The endocrine system maintains homeostasis in the body. The antioxidant protection (GPX-1) of the pineal gland in mature rats was studied. Animals of the experimental group represented a model of microelementosis, achieved by adding a mixture of heavy metal salts for 90 days to drinking water: zinc (ZnSO4×7H2O) – 5 mg/l, copper (CuSO4×5H2O) – 1 mg/l, iron (FeSO4) – 10 mg/l, manganese (MnSO4×5H2O) – 0.1 mg/l, lead (Pb(NO3)2) – 0.1 mg/l, and chromium (K2Cr2O7) – 0.1 mg/l. Morphological, statistical and immunohistochemical (GPX-1) research methods were used. Long-term (90-days) intake of heavy metal salts mixture in the body of experimental animals brought about development of the general adaptation syndrome, the stage of chronic stress “subcompensation” in the pineal gland. Morphological rearrangements were of nonspecific polymorphic nature as severe hemodynamics disorder in the organ, impairment of vascular wall morphology, development of tissue hypoxia and oxidative stress, accompanied by processes of accelerated apoptosis in part of pinealocytes, by a significant decrease in glutathione peroxidase level in the organ and reactive astrogliosis as a response to the damaging agent’s action. Along with the negative changes in the pineal gland, a compensatory-adaptive processes with signs of functional stress also occurred. A sufficiently high degree of glutathione peroxidase activity in 39% of pinealocytes located perivascularly, active adaptive glial reaction and activation of synthetic processes in some pinealocytes were also observed.

An important environmental problem is the pollution of the environment with heavy metal salts, which are in various combinations depending on the region and cause adverse effects on public health. The endocrine system together with the immune and nervous system maintains homeostasis in the body. In order to study the morphofunctional rearrangements of the epiphyseal-parathyroid axis structural components in rats during 30 days of readaptation after 90 days of exposure to heavy metal salts (zinc (ZnSO4 · 7H2O) — 5 mg/l, copper (CuSO4 · 5H2O) — 1 mg/l, iron (FeSO4 ) — 10 mg/l, manganese (MnSO4 · 5H2O) — 0.1 mg/l, lead (Pb(NO3 ) 2 ) — 0.1 mg/l and chromium K2Cr2O7) — 0.1 mg/l) an experiment was performed on 24 white sexually mature male rats weighing 250–300 g, aged 7–8 months. The animals of the experimental group consumed ordinary drinking water for 30 days. Morphological, statistical, immunohistochemical and biochemical research methods were used. The 30-day period of readaptation after 90 days of heavy metal salts intake is insufficient to completely restore homeostasis in the epiphyseal-parathyroid system, which is at the stage of chronic stress «subcompensation». Significant morphological changes on the part of the vascular bed of the pineal gland and parathyroid glands (blood stasis, erythrocyte aggregation, sludge phenomenon) were determined, an active glial reaction was formed in the pineal gland, and the structure of the epithelial trabeculae of the glands was disturbed. The levels of parathyroid hormone and calcium in the blood of experimental animals were significantly lower than those of experimental animals. There is a greater vulnerability and faster dynamics of the regenerative processes in the parathyroid glands to the action of salts of heavy metals in comparison with the pineal gland. The development of hypofunction of the parathyroid glands, of course, has a negative effect on the overall calcium metabolism in the body, the development of compensatory and adaptive processes and the course of the general adaptation syndrome in response to the damaging agent.

Xenobiotics, including salts of heavy metals, determine the development of pathology of individual organs and systems of the body. Adrenal hormones occupy a key place in the regulation and maintenance of the organism basic functions. The study of morphological, biochemical and immunohistochemical changes in the adrenal cortex of pubescent male rats at exposure to the complex of heavy metal salts remains an actual aspect of modern morphology. The experiment involved 24 white adult male rats weighing 250–300 g, aged 7–8 months. The animals of the experimental group consumed ordinary drinking water saturated with a combination of heavy metal salts (Zn, Cu, Fe, Mg, Cr) for 60 days. Histological, biochemical (determination of the content of hormones COR – cortisol, DHS – dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) and immunohistochemical (determination of the expression of proliferation marker Ki-67) methods were used. Long-term consumption of the combination of heavy metals salts by mature rats leads to thickening of the stromal component of the gland, the rupture of capillaries and the violation of rheological properties of blood. Chromatin condensation, its marginal location, and initial stages of necrobiotic changes have been found in the spongiocyte nuclear apparatus. For endocrinocytes of the zona glomerulosa and zona reticularis of the gland, a slight increase in proliferative activity has been revealed, while cells of the zona fasciculata were non-reactive. These results correlate with the results of biochemical research, according to which hormones of the zona reticularis – DHS were actively involved in the formation of adaptive reactions in the body of experimental animals at the 60-day period of administration of the complex of heavy metals salts. The results of complex studies indicate a weakening of the secretory activity of cells of the zona fasciculata, which adversely affects the development of compensatory-adaptive processes in the body and the course of the general adaptation syndrome in response to the action of the damaging agent.
