Immunohistochemical study of secretory IGA in the human male reproductive tract

Abstract: Summary. Male human genital tract was treated for the immunohistochemical demonstration of secretory IgA in order to verify its own possible antimicrobial properties. An intensely positive immunoreaction for sIgA in the epithelial cells of prostate and urethral glands was observed; in the same organs the presence of immunoreactive cell clusters in the subepithelial layers was noted. Immunostaining in the epithelia of deferent duct, seminal vesicle, deferential ampulla, ejaculatory duct and bulbourethral gland… Show more

“…The presence of PIGR was previously reported in the semen of bulls (Rego et al, 2014) and cats (Mogielnicka-Brzozowska et al, 2020). In humans, PIGR expression was observed in the prostate (Sirigu et al, 1995) which agrees with our results as the prostate is the only accessory sex gland in dolphins.…”

“…22,24,31,32 In fact, the prostate is considered the major site of IgA access into the MRT and this expression can be further induced in the upper MRT if ascending infections occur, 31 strongly supporting a role for the prostate and the pIgR in protection against ascending infections of the MRT. To examine the effect of neutralizing IgA antibodies on infection, the numbers of epithelial cells with chlamydial inclusions were determined by immunohistochemistry.…”

“…Expression of the secretory component of the pIgR is prominent in the urethra and prostate. 22,24,31,32 In fact, the prostate is considered the major site of IgA access into the MRT and this expression can be further induced in the upper MRT if ascending infections occur, 31 strongly supporting a role for the prostate and the pIgR in protection against ascending infections of the MRT. The presented findings support the literature, with infection of the epithelial cells greatest in the urethra, the site of initial infection, while the effect of pIgR-transytosed IgA was greatest in the prostate, and testicular infection was low in both groups.…”
