Immunohistological Studies of an Oncocytoma

Abstract: An oncocytoma of the upper eyelid that occurred in an 82-year-old male was studied immunohistologically according to the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method (secretory component, carbohydrate antigen 19–9, carcinoembryonic antigen, anticytokeratin AE1/AE3, S–100 protein, myoglobin, actin, vimentin). The staining properties of columnar-type oncocytes were the same as those of epithelial cells of excretory ducts µ of Moll’s gland, but those of polygonal-type oncocytes were similar to those of myoepithelial c… Show more

“…While this explanation may still hold true for two of the three cases in this study, the location of the third oncocytoma (cheek area) in the current series indicates that exceptions to the ductular histogenesis may exist. Furthermore, most reports indicate oncocytomas to be composed of tubular or papillary structures 16–18 . The more solid nature of the neoplasm in two of our three cases, although unusual, has been previously reported 19 .…”

“…S100, cytokeratin, and myoglobin were positive in the polyhedral cells, similar to the expression in the myoepithelial cells in Moll glands. 24 Neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions that are composed of large, polygonal cells with abundant, deeply eosinophilic cytoplasm can appear similar to oncocytomas. Half of all granular cell tumors are found in the head and neck region and may resemble oncocytomas due to their abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm.…”

“…IgA, SC, lysozyme, and MUC1 are also present in the human eyelids [Stoeckelhuber et al, 2003] and are expressed identically in the apocrine glands of Moll. In humans, antimicrobial substances such as the lysozyme [Mason and Taylor, 1975], IgA, and SC of IgA [Tomasi and Grey, 1972;Fukuo et al, 1994] are secreted into the lumen of various glands. Lysozyme is localized in the lacrimal glands of man [Gilette et al, 1981].…”
