“…Wishahi et al, reported that the incidence of recurrence in patients with TCC associated with urinary schistosomiasis was 15% after KLH treatment compared with 77% before therapy (Wishahi et al, 1995). This result was similar to the results obtained by Olson et al, (1974) and Jurincic et al, (1998) confirming the outstanding immunotherapeutic properties of KLH (Olsson et al, 1974;Jurincic et al, 1988). The efficacy of this treatment in patients with carcinoma in situ (CIS) grade 3 was studied in a long-term follow-up.…”

“…In a 1974 delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) experiment to measure the immune competence of patients with TCC, Olson and collaborators reported the unexpected result that patients subcutaneously primed with 5 mg of KLH and then subcutaneous immunized with 200 µg of KLH had a significantly diminished tumor recurrence rate over a study period of two years. Those patients that were DTH positive to KLH, and therefore immune competent, had almost no recurrences (Olsson et al, 1974). This outstanding effect was confirmed many years later in a controlled study of patients in stages Ta and T1 who had previously been subject to TUR.…”

“…These novel structures, together with the high levels of cross-reactivity with a variety of carbohydrate Ags, may contribute to the immunogenicity of KLH (47). In 1974, Olsson et al (48) discovered that patients immunized with KLH had a reduction in recurrence of bladder carcinomas. The cross-reactive epitope was identified (49), and clinical trials with Immucothel, a KLH subunit, are reported (50).…”

“…The hemocyanin from the mollusk keyhole limpet (Megathura crenulata), known as KLH, has been used for the above purposes. Besides these biomedical effects, KHL has been used in the diagnosis and immunotherapy of Shistosomias (Li et al, 1994), in drug addiction (Ettinger et al, 1997;Beike et al, 1997), and as a component of experimental synthetic minimal viral vaccines against AIDS (Naylor et al, 1991) and papilloma virus (Meyer et al, 1998), and exhibit also antitumour activity against different kinds of tumours (Olsson et al, 1974;Lamm et al, 2000;Jurincic-Winkler et al, 2000;Sandmaier et al, 1999;McFadden et al, 2003;Vona-Davis et al, 2004).…”
