“…The data illustrated by these studies are similar to those of our previous studies with different organic dust extracts such as coffee, soy, spices, animal food, poultry and swine confinement building dust, brewery dust (hops, barley, yeast), as well as textile dust (cotton, hemp and wool) [23][24][25][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]. The pharamcologic studies of paper dust extract on isoalted guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle suggest a complex effect of this airway irritant.…”

“…Since that time, numerous epidemiological studies have been conducted in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe, documenting this occupational hazard [Donham et al, 1982[Donham et al, , 1984a[Donham et al, ,b, 1989Attwood, 1987;Cormier, 1991;Bongers, 1987;Haglind, 1987;Holness, 1987;Dosman, 1988;Zuskin, 1991;Wilhelmsson, 19891. Several review articles have been published summarizing these epidemiological and environmental findings [Donham, 1990[Donham, , 1992[Donham, , 1993Rylander, 19891. Although there have been many studies documenting the widespread nature of the hazard, there have been only a few articles published regarding prevention.…”

“…[8][9][10] The role of airborne exposure to pig urinary proteins (PUP) and of anti-PUP IgE sensitization in respiratory health problems of pig farmers are, however, not completely understood. Incidental cases have been described of occupational asthma associated with IgE anti-PUP antibodies, [11][12][13] but studies in which atopic anti-PUP sensitization has been systematically investigated in populations, 12,[14][15][16][17][18][19] have produced largely different prevalences of positive skin prick tests (SPT) or IgE serology, from (nearly) complete absence 14,18,19 up to 12%, 6 18% 18 and even 44%, 15 while the associations with presence of respiratory symptoms or other respiratory disease indices were not always clear. Moreover, in the studies showing a high prevalence of pig-specific SPT or IgE reactions, 15,18 positive test results were also found with relatively high frequencies--39% and 10%, respectively--in controls with neither occuptional exposure nor respiratory disease.…”
