Immunological mechanisms contributing to the double burden of diabetes and intracellular bacterial infections

Abstract: SummaryDiabetes has been recognized as an important risk factor for a variety of intracellular bacterial infections, but research into the dysregulated immune mechanisms contributing to the impaired host-pathogen interactions is in its infancy. Diabetes is characterized by a chronic state of lowgrade inflammation due to activation of pro-inflammatory mediators and increased formation of advanced glycation end products. Increased oxidative stress also exacerbates the chronic inflammatory processes observed in d… Show more

“…NK cells undergo dramatic metabolic reprogramming upon activation, upregulating rates of glucose uptake and glycolysis [22]. Phagocytic and antibacterial dysfunction may be mediated directly through altered glucose metabolism and oxidative stress [23]. The present study shows that increase and decrease of liver glucose are detected in the lying and survival fish, indicating that elevating glucose forms a characteristic feature of fish anti-infective metabolic strategy against EIB202 infection.…”

“…In patients with malignancies, populations of innate immune cells are often reduced due to the side effects of cytotoxic therapies that kill rapidly dividing cells, including immune cells and malignant cells, resulting in conditions such as neutropenia (108). Finally, diabetics have impaired bacterial defenses, including altered chemokine and cytokine production, neutrophil responses, and phagocytic capabilities (109,110). These defects arise in conjunction with many other alterations in the immune system that are all likely attributable to altered glucose metabolism and oxidative stress.…”

“…Diabetes predisposes to tuberculosis due to the profound effects of hyperglycemia on body defense mechanisms including suppression of cell-mediated immune mechanisms [10]. It is also well known that presence of diabetes mellitus also alters the way pulmonary tuberculosis manifests and adversely affects clinical and treatment outcomes [11].…”
