Immunostimulant Activity of Picroliv, the Iridoid Glycoside Fraction ofPicrorhiza kurroa, and its Protective Action againstLeishmania donovaniInfection in Hamsters1

Abstract: Picroliv, a standardised fraction from root and rhizome of PICRORHIZA KURROA, consisting of iridoid glycosides and shown to be responsible for its hepatoprotective activity, was studied for immunostimulant activity. Oral administration of Picroliv (10 mg/kg x 7 days) in mice prior to immunization with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) resulted in a significant increase in haemagglutinating antibody (HA) titre, plaque forming cells (PFC), and delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) response to SRBC. Picroliv enhanced the non… Show more

“…In the last few decades, improved understanding of the mechanism of action of traditional plant based crude extracts and formulations, lead to the discovery of various class of compounds as potential immunostimulators viz., alkaloids, saponins, polysaccharide, triterpenoids, iridoids, organic acids, etc (Alamgir and Uddin 2010 (Puri, Saxena et al 1992). Several polysaccharides such as mannan and 1-3 glucan 5 isolated from many plant sources such as Chlorella sp, Tinospora cordifolia etc.…”

“…The plant, P. kurrooa, was a traditional medicine used in India for treatment of jaundice, indigestion, common fever, acute viral hepatitis, and bronchial asthma [1]. Previous pharmacological studies for this species have revealed hepatoprotective [2], immunostimulative [3], anti-asthma [4], neuritogenic [5], anti-inflammatory [6] and scavenging free radical activities [7]. The other species, P. scrophulariiflora, is a traditional Chinese medicine, which also has hepatoprotective, choleretic, immunostimulative and antiinflammatory activities [8,9].…”
