Immunostimulatory effects of the standardized extract of Tinospora crispa on innate immune responses in Wistar Kyoto rats

Abstract: Tinospora crispa (TC) has been used in folkloric medicine for the treatment of various diseases and has been reported for several pharmacological activities. However, the effects of TC extract on the immune system are largely unknown. Therefore, the present study was aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of a standardized 80% ethanol extract of the stem of TC on innate immune responses. Male Wistar Kyoto rats were treated daily at 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg doses of the extract for 21 days… Show more

“…The herbal remedy significantly improved and even cleared the symptoms of inflammation in the experimental animals. The result of this present study is partly in agreement with that of a previous study by Ahmad W, et al [38] in which the immunostimulatory effect of the extract of Tinospora crispa (a traditional medication with indications for several illnesses) on innate immune responses in Wistar Kyoto rats was demonstrated. Animals treated with extract of Tinospora crispa (21days) had enhanced expression of CD4+ (87.745±4.09Cells/μl), and CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell (49.345±2.76ng/mL) in comparison with the control (49.085±2.88Cells/μl, and 20.255±1.61ng/mL, respectively).…”

“…Los linfocitos T, son la parte vital del sistema inmunitario defensivo y, se diferencian en dos subconjuntos diferentes según su molécula de membrana específica, que son los linfocitos T CD4+ y CD8+. Los linfocitos T son los principales protectores del huésped contra las enfermedades, por lo tanto, la activación y proliferación de los mismos son vitales durante el ataque de infecciones u otras condiciones patológicas 31 .…”

“…Splenocytes and thymocytes were prepared in accordance with previously described methods (Ahmad et al. 2015 ). Briefly, after the rats were terminated, the spleen and thymus were removed aseptically and kept in Hank’s balanced salt solution (HBSS; Gibco Life Technologies, New York, NY, USA).…”
