Immunosuppression by a subconjunctival implant releasing dexamethasone in a rabbit model of penetrating keratoplasty

“…To avoid angle closure and iris bowing likely to be involved in some failures, one or two small surgical iridectomies could be performed during lens removal, and mydriatic eye drop should be used. This xenograft model is not adapted to the analysis of long-term survival and tolerance because of the immunological rejection that appears to occur, as with PKP, after 3 or 4 weeks (Crouzet et al 2018). Nevertheless, we show that 3-4 weeks are sufficient to demonstrate that a TEEK exerts a normal deswelling function, which is a crucial step in the preclinical validation.…”

“…Therefore, this drug is usually used for patients with MD who fail to receive conservative treatment ( 11 ). Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and immunosuppressive effects ( 12 ). Its significant regulatory effect on the expression of myelin P0 protein in the mouse cochlea has been shown by Maeda et al ( 13 ).…”
