Immunosuppressive effect of the aqueous extract of Kalanchoe pinnata in mice

Abstract: The aqueous extract of Kalonchoe pin& leaves was found to cause significant inhibition of cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in mice. The spleen cells of animals pre-treated with K . pin& showed a decreased ability to prolierate in response to both mitogen and to antigen in uitro. Treatment with K . pin& also impaired the ability of mice to mount a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction (DTH) to ovalbumin. The intravenous and topical routes of administration were the most effective by almost completely… Show more

“…Antiparasitic (anti-leishmania), antibacterial, hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activities have been described for Kp leaf extracts (Da Silva et al 1995;Akinpelu, 2000;Muñoz et al 2000;Yadav and Dixit, 2003;Rossi-Bergmann et al 1994;Almeida et al, 2000). Exploratory toxicological studies in mice and humans have indicated absence of chronic and acute oral toxicity (Torres-Santos et al, 2003, Sousa et al, 2005.…”

“…The anti-anaphylactic activity of the aqueous extract of Kp leaves given orally to ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice indicated the potent immunomodulatory action, preferentially inhibiting Th2-type immune responses known to be committed with enhanced susceptibility to cutaneous leishmaniasis and to allergies (Rossi-Bergmann et al, 1994;Da Silva et al 1999, Cruz et al 2008, Gomes et al 2009. Despite the early reports on the antihistaminic activity of Kp using the experimental models of isolated guinea pig ileum contraction and vasodilatation in rats (Nassis et al, 1992); its fatty acid associated suppressive activity on T cells (Rossi-Bergmann et al, 1994, Almeida et al, 2000.…”

“…Malaria is a major global public health problem and responsible for mortality of over 1 million people annually, where 1-10 malaria cases of 1000 population were found in Indonesia [17][18]. The development of chloroquine as an antimalarial drug and the subsequent evolution of drug-resistant Plasmodium strains had major impacts on global public health [19].…”

“…Succulent plants belonging to this genus can reproduce sexually during the blooming season or by leaf-plantlet development (Allorge-Boiteau, 1996). Kalanchoe pinnata (Lamarck) Persoon (=Bryophyllum pinnatum) is a perennial medicinal herb, popularly used in Brazil and other parts of the world to treat various infl ammatory diseases (Hema et al, 1986 andRossi-Bergmann et al, 1994). Several biological activities have been reported for K. pinnata such as immunosuppressive effects (Rossi-Bergmann et al, 1994), hepatoprotective activity (Yadav;Dixit, 2003), acetylcholinesterase inhibition (Barbosa-Filho et al, 2006), besides an important protection against progressive infection with Leishmania amazonensis (Da-Silva et al, 1995 andMuzitano et al, 2006).…”

Kalanchoe brasiliensis -another medicinal species popularly known by the same name (saião) and widely used against rheumatism and infl ammatory processes -showed protection against the local effects (edema, hemorrhage and necrosis) of Bothrops alternatus venom in mice (Fonseca et al, 2004) and anti-infl ammatory activity (Mourão et al, 1999;Ibrahim et al, 2002;Falcão et al, 2005;Costa et al, 2006)."…”
