“…In mice, pnCDF was almost as immunotoxic as TCDD. 28 In 1991, a random subgroup of our Yucheng children had, in addition to PCBs, high serum levels of pnCDF and ~x C D F . '~, *~ The median body burden of PCDFs and PCBs approximated 30 ng/kg of TCDD equivalency (assuming a body fat content of 24%).…”

“…The cellular mechanisms of PCBs toxic action(s) remain elusive, but there are several hypotheses. Several of these converge on the modification of cellular Ca 2+ homeostasis, inducing changes in mitochondrial membrane integrity, oxygen radical generation, or protein kinase C translocation (Harper et al, 1993;BEST, 2001;Pocar et al, 2006;Ferrante et al, 2011). It has been speculated that the PCBs interact with the sheep red blood cell receptor or specific membrane functions of human T-lymphocytes (Heinzow and Tinneberg Tinnerberg in refs., 1989).…”

“…Reduced antibody responses (Davis and Safe, 1990) and superoxide anion production by neutrophils (Ganey et al, 1993) have been attributed to immunotoxic effects of ortho-substituted PCB congeners. Harper et al (1993) showed that splenic plaque-forming cell responses to antigens were reduced by ortho-substituted PCB congeners, which are inactive at the Ah receptor. Similarly, lipopolysaccharide-induced splenocyte proliferation was preferentially inhibited by individual congeners with multiple ortho substitutions, while suppression of antibody secretion was not attributed by a particular chlorine substitution pattern (Smithwick et al, 2003).…”
