Impact behavior of hybrid composite plates

Abstract: Table I), were chosen for impact testing. The impact energy was gradually increased until complete perforation took place, and an energy profiling method (EPM) was used to identify the perforation thresholds of composites. The damaged samples were visually inspected. The images of the several samples subjected to various impact energies were registered and used for comparison and identifying damage mechanisms. The perforation thresholds for [0/ 90/645] s aramid/glass and aramid/carbon laminates were found to b… Show more

“…Polymeric materials in the form of ballistic laminate composites are usually used as spall-liners. Synthetic fibres such as aramid and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are widely used in ballistic laminates and many engineering applications [1]. Kevlar, the most well-known aramid fibres used for protective systems, has high strength, high modulus and good tenacity, which are desirable properties for ballistic applications.…”

“…The impact behavior of hybrid fiber reinforced composites has been an area of extensive research over the years, and these researches are too numerous to mention particularly here. However, most of the available literature work such as carbon/glass , carbon/aramid , and aramid/glass focused on the improvement of impact behavior of polymer matrix composites reinforced with carbon fiber, aramid fiber or glass fiber. The effect of stacking sequences and laminate thickness on impact behavior of hybrid composites are mostly reported outcomes in the above studies.…”

“…The diagram is useful for comparing the impact and absorbed energies, and for identifying the penetration and perforation thresholds. Thus, a relation can be created between impact energies and failure mechanisms by determination of penetration and perforation thresholds [1].…”

“…The failure modes of damaged composite laminates include fiber breakage, matrix cracking, fiber-matrix debonding and delamination. Among these, delamination causes the most detrimental results on composite stiffness and strength [1][2][3][4][5]. Hence, impact event is very important in design.…”
