Impact energy identification on a composite plate using basis vectors

Abstract: In this study, an impact energy identification method based on basis vectors is proposed to estimate the impact location and impact energy using piezoceramic sensors. A large number of parameterized impact experiments have been conducted on a composite plate to illustrate the linear relationship between signal energy and impact energy, which is also revealed by a theoretical analysis. The signal features of stress waves caused by different impactors are analyzed in the frequency domain to obtain a feature vect… Show more

“…[8][9][10][11] This work mainly involves two steps: impact localization and impact force reconstruction. 12 Moreover, the study published by Wu et al also estimated the impact energy to assess the remaining life of the structure system. 12 In the case of impact localization, the time of fight (ToF) or time of arrival (ToA) of transducers are effective indicators for locating the impact position.…”

“…e second approach is data-driven, in which a known set of features of the impact signal are generally mapped to the impact locations using a training algorithm. Such methods include database matching [22,23] and machinelearning-based methods [24,25]. e database matching method requires impact testing at different locations on the structure surface in advance to build a characteristics database of elastic waves generated at different impact points.…”

“…Yuan (20) proposed a near-field multiple signal classification-based impact localisation method, noting that the velocity of the signal should be used in the method. Wu (21) used basis vectors to identify the impact location and impact energy on composite plate. The basis-vector-based method is widely used in other areas of research, such as the matching pursuit method (22) , building the fuzzy model (23) , the least squares support vector machine (24) , the location determination in the communications (25) and so on.…”
