Impact in interdisciplinary and cross‐sector research: Opportunities and challenges

Abstract: Impact is embedded in today's research culture, with increasing importance being placed on the value of research to society. In interdisciplinary and cross-sector projects, team members may hold distinct views on the types of impact they want to create. Set in the context of an interdisciplinary, cross-sector project comprised of partners from academia, industry, and the nonprofit sector, our paper unpacks how these diverse project members understand impact. Our analysis shows that interdisciplinary projects o… Show more

“…This poses two problems: First, for many HEIs, the communication of their impacts on SD is becoming an essential part of satisfying emerging accountability expectations from public and private funders, policymakers, accreditation agencies, students and faculty (Bonaccorsi et al, 2010). Second, there is a lack of clarity and a divergent understanding of the concept (Gooch et al, 2017;Koehn and Uitto, 2014). Greater clarity on and deeper knowledge of such impacts is a prerequisite for well-informed strategic decisions and improved contribution to SD (Lozano et al, 2013a).…”

“…Even though the expected benefit is not yet clearly observable, in‐use research outputs generate a practice impact as they set users in motion towards improvement. For instance, it was observed in a research project that adoption of the proposed intelligent tutoring system served as a vehicle for change by “first introducing cultural change in schools and shifting inertia around dyslexia” (Gooch, Vasalou, & Benton, , p. 384). Similarly, the Academic Research Impact Model proposed by Swanson () considers both initial and successive adoption of research outputs by practitioners in the field to be forms of impact.…”
