Impact of 10 Dietary Sterols on Growth and Reproduction of Daphnia galeata

Abstract: Abstract-In crustaceans, cholesterol is an essential nutrient, which they must directly obtain from their food or by bioconversion from other dietary sterols. Eukaryotic phytoplankton contain a great variety of sterols that differ from cholesterol in having additional substituents or different positions and/or number of double bonds in the side chain or in the sterol nucleus. In this study, we investigated to what extent these structural features affect the growth and reproduction of Daphnia galeata in standar… Show more

“…However, picocyanobacteria, such as species of the genus Synechococcus, are unsuitable for supporting Daphnia spp. growth and reproduction (Lampert 1977a,b, 1981, Von Elert et al 2003, Martin-Creuzburg & Von Elert 2004, MartinCreuzburg et al 2005; therefore, cladocerans might also benefit from grazing on protozoans, provided that protozoan carbon is more suitable for Daphnia spp.…”

“…Conner et al 1969;Nusblat et al 2005). Sterols containing double bonds at D , or D 5,7,22 enhance the growth of Daphnia on a sterolfree diet (Martin-Creuzburg and von Elert 2004). Therefore, the improved growth of D. magna on cholesterol-supplemented C. campylum ( Fig.…”

“…However, although rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, ciliates are less nutritious for daphnids than many algae (Bec et al 2003;DeBiase et al 1990;Sanders et al 1996;Wickham et al 1993). 1 Recently, the dietary sterol content has been identified as a crucial factor in determining food quality for Daphnia (Martin-Creuzburg and Von Elert 2004Elert , 2005aVon Elert et al 2003). Available data suggest that ciliates lack the ability to synthesize sterols de novo (e.g.…”
