Impact of a Nutritional Risk Index on Clinical Outcomes after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

Abstract: Nutritional status is an important component of cancer care, and malnutrition itself can cause death in 10% to 20% of cancer patients. A nutritional risk index (NRI) is a useful tool for nutritional assessment of cancer patients. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pretransplant NRI values on outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). One hundred sixty patients who underwent allo-HSCT between January 2008 and July 2017 at Konan Kosei Hospital were included in this single-cent… Show more

“…This relationship was supported by the analysis of total-TMA. NRI was a nutritional indicator widely used in oncology and we have associated a low value with outcomes of allo-HSCT in our previous study [13]. Lower concentration of serum albumin, which strongly affects NRI value, was reported to be associated with mortality of TA-TMA [24].…”

“…Disease risk was classified according to the refined disease risk index proposed by Armand et al [11] The hematopoietic cell transplant-comorbidity index (HCT-CI) was scored according to the report by Sorror et al [12] The nutritional risk index (NRI) was calculated at nearest time point prior conditioning regimen as previously described [13].…”

“…The NRI is a clinical biological index that combines the strength of two nutritional indicators-albumin and weight loss. 25 Serum albumin is an important indicator of nutritional status and immunological functioning. The albumin level decreases upon the occurrence of inflammatory reactions.…”

“…Of late, a growing number of studies report that NRI, which is established based on serum albumin levels, present body weight, and ideal body weight, represents a novel nutrition-related prognostic scoring system. Researchers have also proven that NRI shows prognostic value for primary liver cancer, allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and colorectal cancer (26)(27)(28)(29). Besides, NRI is more accurate than other prognostic factors in predicting survival.…”
