Abstract: Previous studies have identified a role for the gut microbiome and its metabolic products, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), in the maintenance of muscle mass and physical function (i.e., the gut–muscle axis), but interventions aimed at positively impacting the gut–muscle axis during aging are sparse.
