Abstract:Caffeine is a pharmacological agent that has been shown to enhance muscle contraction. The stimulatory effects of caffeine may be, in part, due to alterations in the skeletal muscle redox status. Specifically, caffeine administration to rats has been shown to rapidly, but transiently, decrease levels of skeletal muscle nitric oxide (NO) synthase. Decreased levels of NO could lead to elevated oxidative stress, since NO is a potent superoxide radical scavenger. We tested the hypothesis that acute caffeine admini… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
