Impact of adiposity on cellular adhesion: The Multi‐Ethnic Study of atherosclerosis (MESA)

Abstract: Objective At the cellular level, how excess adiposity promotes atherogenesis is not fully understood. One pathway involves secretion of adipokines that stimulate endothelial dysfunction through increased expression of the adhesion molecules. However, the relationship of adiposity to adhesion molecules that promote atherosclerosis is largely unknown. Methods Linear regression models were used to assess the sex-specific associations of soluble cellular adhesion molecules (sP- and sL-selectin, sICAM-1, sVCAM-1,… Show more

“…As for the CAMs, a review concluded that anthropometric indicators, body composition and eating pattern positively modulate the subclinical inflammation of obesity through reducing CAMs and chemokines [ 78 ]. Moreover, a recent study also identified the relationship of adiposity to several CAMs [ 79 ].…”

“…VCAM-1 relates to the thickness of the carotid intima-media and its plaque in rheumatoid arthritis [ 40 ]. In women, serum sVCAM-1 is inversely correlated with visceral adipose tissue [ 41 ]. In persons with hyperglycemia, moderate exercise was shown to increase sVCAM-1 [ 42 ].…”

“…Platelet P-selectin is associated with hypertension [ 73 ]; in patients with hypertension caused by primary aldosteronism serum, sP-selectin decreased after removal of aldosterone-secreting adrenal adenoma [ 74 ]. Plasma sP-selectin associates with waist-to-hip ratio and visceral adipose tissue in men [ 41 ]. In healthy persons, physical effort relates to lower sP-selectin [ 75 ].…”

“…In the current study, low HDL is associated with increased inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and low adiponectin ( Table 2 ). In the study of Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients in Middle East (6,266 patients), obesity was the main predictor of low HDL [ 18 ]. Moderate weight loss, regular exercise, and cessation of smoking significantly increase HDL [ 18 ].…”
