This article seeks greater clarity in the connections between water and regenerative agriculture (RA). We first review existing soil/water knowledge and argue that desired “RA and water” outcomes depend on the management and optimal levels of two key soil properties; readily available moisture and infiltration rate. Secondly, we hypothesize these help define a range of RA beneficial outcomes or “promises,” such as improved vegetative growth, reduced risk of erosive runoff, higher soil organic matter content and biological fertility, easier irrigation management, resilience to drought, better water filtration and less variable streamflow hydrology. Thirdly we show that by not fully understanding water's multiple roles for achieving desired RA outcomes, risks, contradictions and “pitfalls” can arise. With these three parts we observe that carefully explained and quantified roles of water in the existing RA literature are often missing, neglected, over-generalized or poorly explained. We also suggest that narratives and terms (e.g., “net zero” or “net positive”) for describing the benefits and aims of RA and water can lack context and situational fit, or are misleading and incorrect. Cautions also apply to water quantities additionally required for soil regeneration activities, recognizing stiff competition for scarce river basin water and its allocation. How necessary quantities overlap with local and catchment policies for water allocations and hydrology, incorporating farmers' views and choices and informed by field, farm and system water accounting, are critical to successful agricultural practices including those that are “regenerative.” Accordingly, we suggest that scientists and decisions-makers should more thoroughly interrogate how “RA and water” is being analyzed so that relevant policies develop its promises whilst avoiding pitfalls.

Growth, Yield and Pest Infestation Assessment of Solanum Lycopersicum Under Pest Exclusion Net (Pen) Technique in Bangladesh

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most popular vegetable crops in Bangladesh. The production of this crop in open field is constrained by major pests like fruit borer, yellow striped armyworm and caterpillar. A pest exclusion net (PEN) experiment was carried out to assess the performance of seven varieties of tomato through growth, yield and pest occurrence. The two-factor experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three conditions viz. under net without pesticide, no net with pesticide, no net without pesticide and three replications. Data were analyzed with MSTAT-Cv. 2.1 software package and means were separated by Duncan’s multiple range test (DMRT) at 1% level of significance. The result revealed that crop under PEN had maximum plant height (98.47±1.02 cm), inflorescence number per plant (20.34±0.06), open flowers number per plant (69.34±2.02), fruit number per plant (43.12±0.03), individual fruit weight (49.70±0.02 g), gross yield (50.76±1.06 tons/ha) whereas no net with or without pesticide condition produced the minimum above traits. However, most of the parameters showed decreasing trend under no net condition except pest incidence. This study shows that the use of PEN protect tomato against pests, increases growth and yield which can be considered as a viable technology for tomato production by marginal farmers of Bangladesh. The co-application of biochar compost as organic amendment for crop production and soil remediation has gained momentum due to their positive effect on plant growth and soil quality improvement. The application of biochar and compost which are green and cost-effective soil remediators would promote the availability and distribution of food, planetary conservation, alleviate poverty, and enhance the attainment of Sustainable Millennium Development Goals (SDGs). A bibliometric analysis was conducted to overview research on biochar compost from 2011 to 2021. Two hundred and fifty-four research papers were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using VOS viewer. Analysis revealed that 217 (85.43%) were articles, 21 (8.27%) were conference papers, and 12 (4.72%) were review papers. The results showed an exponential increase in the number of publications. The most productive countries in the investigated subject were China (49), followed by USA (36), Australia (29), Italy (28), Germany (25), and Indonesia (20). After the search terms, ‘soil,’ which had links with keywords like ‘soil fertility,’ ‘soil quality,’ ‘soil pollution,’ ‘phosphorus,’ ‘nitrogen,’ ‘maize,’ ‘greenhouse gas,’ etc., had the highest occurrences (94). From the results of the current hotspot research in the field, the effect of biochar-compost mixture and co-composted biochar on soil remediation is currently being studied by several researchers. Biochar and compost incorporation in soil reduce the uptake of pollutants by plants which consequently increase essential nutrients for plant and soil productivity.
