Impact of Air Pollution and Climate Conditions on Carbon Steel in Slovak Republic

Abstract: The paper describes the impact of multi-pollution of atmosphere on carbon steel construction material in Slovak Republic. Corrosion like one of the most decisive factor determining the lifetime of material increases the risk of failure, which has considerable impact on maintenance costs. The objective of the article is to calculate potential material losses of carbon steel using the dose-response functions derived from the results of outdoor exposure program and by STN EN ISO 9223. The values were calculated a… Show more

“…Among other purposes, ANNs are used to model experimental data of atmospheric corrosion. To apply this methodology, some steps should be followed: preprocessing the original dataset; dividing the preprocessed dataset into training, validation, and test datasets, establishing, training and testing the architecture of the model, and implementation [ 79 , 80 ]. However, in corrosion field tests, the sample size is generally not big enough to guarantee a high prediction accuracy when an ANN model is used [ 42 ].…”

“…Based on the pollution and climate conditions, like sulphur dioxide SO 2 , chloride ions Cl -, temperature T and relative humidity Rh, the corrosion rate of zinc r corr, zinc can be calculated according to standard STN EN ISO 9223 [15]. It is obvious that the above mentioned input parameters, as well as the corrosion rate of zinc, are changing over time [16]- [18]. This is why it is useful to know how those parameters are changing during the years [19], which can be seen on the map of aggressiveness of the environment.…”
