Purpose of reviewTo achieve health equity in eye health and vision care, social determinants of health (SDoH) and the associated social risk factors must be addressed. To address SDoH and social risk factors in ophthalmology, they must first be identified. The purpose of this review was to determine the SDoH and social risk factors in conditions of the cornea that have most recently been explored. Recent findingsThis review identified social risk factors associated with all five domains of SDoH, as outlined by Healthy People 2030. The neighborhood and built environment was the domain identified the most for both exploration and observation. The social and community context domain was the least explored, and healthcare access and quality and social and community context domains were the least observed. The cornea condition explored the most in relation to SDoH was dry eye syndrome.

The purpose of this study is to explore the associations among dry eye disease (DED), air pollution, and meteorological conditions in the cold region of a northeastern Chinese metropolis (i.e., Changchun). Data on ambient air pollutants and meteorological parameters as well as diagnosed DED outpatients during 2015–2021 were collected. The associations between DED and environmental factors were analysed at multiple time scales using various statistical methods (i.e., correlation, regression and machine learning). Among the 10,809 DED patients (21,617 eyes) studied, 64.60% were female and 35.40% were male. A higher frequency of DED was observed in March and April, followed by January, August and October. Individual and multiple factor models showed the positive importance of particles with aerodynamic diameters <10 μm (PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3) among normal air pollutants and air pressure (AP), air temperature (AT) and wind speed (WS) among normal meteorological parameters. Air pollutants (PM10, nitrogen dioxide: NO2) and meteorological parameters (AT, AP) have combined impacts on DED occurrence. For the first time, we further explored the associations of detailed components of atmospheric particles and DED, suggesting potential emission sources, including spring dust from bare soil and roads and precursor pollutants of summer O3 formation from vehicles and industry in Northeast China. Our results revealed the quantitative associations among air pollutants, meteorological conditions and DED outpatients in cold regions, highlighting the importance of coordinated policies in air pollution control and climate change mitigation.

This study aims to explore the associations and the underlying mechanism among DED, air pollution, and meteorological conditions. The DED is positively correlated with air pollutants (i.e., PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and SO2) and meteorological conditions (i.e., high altitude, and wind speed), while negatively associated with relative humidity. Both low and high air temperature all effect DED. Atmospheric pollutants affect DED mainly through necroptosis or autophagy, inflammatory responses, oxidative stress. Meteorological factors affect DED not only by their own affects but also by dispersing the concentration of air pollutants, and then reduced the negative exposure. In summary, this review may expand the understanding of the effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on DED and emphasis the importance of air environmental protection. Ziel dieser Studie war es, den Zusammenhang zwischen trockenem Auge, Luftverschmutzung und meteorologischen Bedingungen und den ihnen zugrundeliegenden Mechanismen zu untersuchen.DED war positiv mit Luftschadstoffen (d.h. PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO und SO2) und meteorologischen Bedingungen (d.h. große Höhe und Windgeschwindigkeit) und negativ mit der relativen Luftfeuchtigkeit korreliert.DED wurde sowohl von niedrigen als auch von hohen Lufttemperaturen und von meteorologischen Faktoren beeinflusst, hauptsächlich durch Nekrose oder Autophagie und oxidativen Stress. Sowohl niedrige als auch hohe Temperaturen beeinflussen DED. Luftschadstoffe beeinflussen DED hauptsächlich durch Nekrose oder Autophagie, Entzündungsreaktionen und oxidativen Stress. meteorologische Faktoren beeinflussen DED nicht nur allein, sondern auch durch die Verteilung von Luftschadstoffkonzentrationen und somit durch die Verringerung der negativen Exposition. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass diese Übersichtsarbeit das Verständnis der Auswirkungen von Luftverschmutzung und meteorologischen Faktoren auf DED erweitern und die Bedeutung des Umweltschutzes in der Luft unterstreichen kann.
