Impact of alley cropping system on soil fertility

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of pruned materials of two hedgerow species on wheat production and soil nutrient changes at different nitrogen levels in the research farm of the Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMARU) during November 2012 to March 2013. The design of the experiment was split plot, where two multipurpose tree species (MPTS) namely Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala were arranged in main plots and five different doses of nitrogen (0… Show more

“…Many of the advantages of trees on a farm landscape are similar to those of trees in a neighbouring forest, but they also have certain special advantages that can be tapped into through the development and management of agroforestry (the integration of woody plants into farming systems) [27]. For instance, trees cultivated on farms for their fruit or wood generate a substantial amount of revenue for the nearby farmers [28], often accounting for more than 17% of their annual income, while rural households only generate 6% of their income from trees. Households may receive crucial nutrients from these trees [29], such as vitamin C, which can assist in meeting the minimal daily requirements for micro-nutrients [19], [30].…”

“…The texture of the soil has been changed to loamy by manual deposits of alluvial soils [23]. However, the available phosphorus content of the soil was low and other elements were almost at satisfactory level [24].…”

“…Among the treatments, the highest exchangeable K was recorded in W 4.5 N 100 +PM (0.19 meq/100 g soil) and the lowest was found in both CC+N o and CC+N 25 (0.08 meq/100 g soil) treatments (Table 3). Crop removal and losses through runoff may be attributed to the lowest exchangeable K in the control plot, whereas, the increase in exchangeable K in plots under the three different alley widths might be due to the return of K via tree pruning and leaf litterfall to the soil surface [42] and an increased exchangeable K was observed under G. sepium [24].…”

“…The vegetable hummingbird is also known as Bakphul in Bangladesh. These two species biologically fix N, can withstand repeated pruning, produce a large amount of pruning materials and nutrients, and are relatively long-lived [9,10]. During the evaluation of the alley cropping system in a flat upland ecosystem, the assessment of commercially grown vegetables on that land type should be given emphasis.…”
