Impact of ankylosing spondylitis on work in patients across the UK

Abstract: Psychological, sociodemographic, and disease-related factors were all found to be related to work status. These factors should be taken into account when considering early treatment and management. Depression, in particular, appears to be associated with employment, absenteeism, and presenteeism, and should therefore be prioritized in clinical practice.

“…Presenteeism in AS patients has never been compared to the general population, but 53% of the patients (n 5 72) experienced limitations while at work and reported reduced efficiency due to AS (3.3 on a 0-10 scale) (2). The productivity loss at work in AS patients was estimated to be 8.3% (n 5 66) (7) and 18.9% (n 5 315) (8) using the 25-item and 16-item Work Limitations Questionnaires, respectively.…”

“…Several instruments have been developed, but they provide different results (2,7,8,17,(21)(22)(23)(24). Among the instruments for presenteeism assessment, a self-reported measure of productivity at work might be a relevant indicator for future adverse work outcomes, like sick leave, because it accounts not only for symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and fatigue, but also for the effects of these symptoms on working speed, concentration, and interpersonal interactions.…”

“…Анкилозирующий спондилоартрит (АС) отно-сится к тем ревматическим системным заболевани-ям, которые наносят огромный медико-социальный урон конкретному больному человеку и обществу в целом, а ощутимый экономический ущерб при этом испытывает любое государство [16,43]. Распростра-ненность АС среди населения в среднем составляет 0,1-0,3 % [7,35,46], преимущественно развивается в возрасте 20-35 лет, в 4 раза чаще у мужчин [21].…”
