Impact of antiseptics on Chlamydia trachomatis growth

Abstract: We measured the antichlamydial effects of various antiseptics. These antiseptics are being used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, but their effect on the bacterial vaginosis-related sexually transmitted infections, particularly the most frequent Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) infections has not been investigated. We showed that povidone-iodine (Betadine) inhibited the chlamydial growth in concentrations that was not toxic to the epithelial cells. We concluded that due to its additional antichla… Show more

“…The Chlamydiales order bacteria are eukaryotic cells obligate intracellular parasites [5]. Chlamydial infections in animals cause a wide range of clinical diseases that do not have clear signs.…”

“…Direct PCR and direct qPCR eliminate the purification step, significantly shortening the protocol, but the inhibitory effect of the direct sample can be present. Previously, direct qPCR methods have been successfully applied to monitor Chlamydia and herpes simplex virus-2 growth and the antimicrobial effects of various compounds [6][7][8][9][10][11]. In this study, we want to leave out the DNA purification step and develop a direct qPCR detection method that is suitable to detect Mycoplasma contamination within U937 cell cultures.…”
