Impact of B. melitensis Rev-1 vaccination on brucellosis prevalence

Abstract: Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3-to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from… Show more

“…In the present study, primiparous goats had approximately twice the chance of presenting RD than all other parities. This fact could be justified, at least partly, by abortions caused by the presence of brucellosis during these three studied decades [51,52,53] and dystocia, which are more frequent in primiparous goats [54,55,56]. Currently, brucellosis can be considered eradicated in Portuguese goat farms and only few numbers of seropositive animals to Brucella can be detected in circumscribed zones [57].…”

“…melitensis Rev.1 is the only vaccine that is being used for the prevention of brucellosis in specific hosts. This vaccine has proved to be the best candidate for prophylaxis of brucellosis in sheep and goats [50][51][52][53]. Unfortunately, there are some side effects related to the use of this vaccine, like the potential reversion of virulence, the capacity of this strain of causing infection in humans and the streptomycin resistance encoding information.…”
