Impact of chemotherapy regimen and hematopoietic growth factor on mobilization and collection of peripheral blood stem cells in cancer patients

Abstract: Various chemotherapy regimens, combined with recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(rhG-CSF) or recombinant granulocyte-macrophage CSF (rhGM-CSF) are used in cancer patients to mobilize and collect peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC). In this retrospective study, we evaluated and compared the efficacy of such regimens in 262 patients with different types of malignant diseases. The following chemotherapy regimens were applied: ifosfamide-etoposide-cisplatin or bleomycin (n = 96; mainly patients … Show more

“…The COAEP protocol resulted in acceptable CD341 cells yields in the present study. Treatment with G-CSF usually begins 24-72 h after the completion of mobilizing chemotherapy [4,6]. In previous reports, CD341 cell yields reached 6.7-6.8 3 10 6 /kg body weight [4,6], with a mean of 12-15 days of G-CSF treatment and a mean of 2-5.24 sessions of leukapheresis.…”

“…In this case, the median duration of G-CSF use is 12-15 days before the first apheresis [4,6]. Other centers start using G-CSF at the time of initial WBC or platelet recovery following mobilization [7].…”

“…However, this correlation was not significant in multivariate analysis except for PB CD34+ cell concentration (11) . A high predictive value of PB CD34+ cell concentration and the yield of these cells in the apheresis product have been reported (11,26) . The limitations of this retrospective study include sample heterogeneity, disease status and different mobilization regimens.…”

“…[23][24][25][26] During the time period of our study, 28 patients (unpublished data) received disease-specific chemotherapy primes with G-CSF and the median time to first harvest was 13 days (range [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. Stem cell recovery is more rapid however following low-dose cyclophosphamide/G-CSF.…”
