Impact of chlortetracycline and sulfapyridine antibiotics on soil enzyme activities

Abstract: Pharmaceutical antibiotics are frequently used in the livestock and poultry industries to control infectious diseases. Due to the lack of proper guidance for use, the majority of administrated antibiotics and their metabolites are excreted to the soil environment through urine and feces. In the present study, we used chlortetracycline and sulfapyridine antibiotics to screen out their effects on dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and urease activity. Factorial experiments were conducted with different concentr… Show more

“…Generally, L-carbohydrates are less inhibitory to α-glucosidases compared to D-enantiomers; especially with the addition of nutrients such as iron. Only L-carbohydrates increased α-glucosidase activity [114][115][116][117][118][119]; the mechanism of this effect is not known yet.…”

“…The smaller the size of the clay particle, the greater is the protection against the added fungicides [96]. The synthesis of amino acids of certain bacteria is repressed by some glucopyranosyl antibiotic fungicides [93,97,98]. The use of Cuin combination with mefenoxam can disturb soil microbial diversity as determined by structural and metabolic profiling.…”

“…Wastewater of industries has a large amount of As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb, and is frequently used as an irrigation source for crop cultivation [ 6 ]. The use of organic fertilizers also leads to the risk of xenobiotic contamination [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ], Besides which, anthropogenic activities have also enhanced heavy metals contamination in cultivatable areas [ 6 , 11 ]. Cadmium (Cd) is toxic which affects the growth and yield of crops [ 12 , 13 ].…”
