Impact of climate change on water resources in Yongdam Dam Basin, Korea

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate the impact of climate change on the runoff and water resources of Yongdam basin, Korea. First, we construct global climate change scenarios using the YONU GCM control run and transient experiments, then transform the YONU GCM gridbox predictions with coarse resolution of climate change into the site-specific values by statistical downscaling techniques. The downscaled values are used to modify the parameters of a stochastic weather generator model f… Show more

“…During the past decade, there has been considerable effort devoted to obtaining a better understanding for natural climate fluctuations to impact water resources (Terray and Cassou 2000;Chen and Xu 2005;Kim et al 2007;Kim et al 2008). However, the mechanisms governing the relationship between the climatic variability and streamflow are still not fully understood (Xu et al 2010b).…”

“…The expected warming may alter the amount of summer precipitation in East Asia. Some studies predicted an increase in summer rainfall due to increased atmospheric moisture, while others suggest that changes in monsoon circulation may also play a role (Huang et al 2007; Kim et al 2007;Zhao et al 2021). It is important to continue researching the potential impacts of global warming on regional precipitation and evapotranspiration patterns to understand potential changes in aridity.…”

“…At first, it was developed as a simple Lumped Reservoir Parametric (SLURP), but it transformed later into a semi-distribution type model of SLURP. This model is a semi-distribution type model, but it is a physical model that can be used as a distribution type model enabling separately considering the event of rain into rainfall and snow (Kim et al 2007). In respect of the applicability for river areas in Korea, Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS), which has been applied to the River Basin Investment Project, was found to be superior.…”
