Impact of considering need for work and risk on performance of construction contractors: An agent-based approach

Abstract: Competitive bidding is the main mechanism of allocating projects in the construction market. In the traditional single criterion bidding method, the markup decision has a significant impact on a contractor's business success. Contractors usually take into consideration several factors in the process of determining their markup. This study has reviewed the literature and identified a range of contractors' behaviors when making their markup decision within a competitive bidding environment. An additive markup fu… Show more

“…Contingencies can be set at various phases of the project development process. Contractors set time and cost contingencies during bidding processes (Smith, Bohn 1999;Laryea, Hughes 2011;Eldosouky et al 2014;Asgari et al 2016) and manage them during the construction phase (Ford 2002;Diab et al 2017). Some contributions propose or discuss methods to determine the initial size of contingencies (Yeo 1990;Seung, Hyung 2004;Barraza 2010;Idrus et al 2011;Bhargava et al 2017).…”

“…Projects are generated consecutively over a simulation period of ten years (520 simulated time units) and are assigned a set of characteristics such as the project budget, the project duration, and uncertainty in cost estimate. Readers can find more details about the developed agent-based model of the construction competitive bidding using AnyLogic in [13][14]. The major assumptions of the paper are the following:…”

“…Henceforth, numerous researchers have stated that construction organizations have learned from their past experiences and made various advancements. Research findings have created modified techniques to address these issues (Safa et al, 2015;Asgari et al, 2016;Aitken and Paton, 2017;Asim et al, 2017b;Deep et al, 2017a.…”
