Impact of Contralateral Symmetry Procedures on Long-Term Patient-Reported Outcomes following Unilateral Prosthetic Breast Reconstruction

Abstract: Prosthetic reconstruction with contralateral breast augmentation was associated with greater satisfaction with breast and reconstructive outcome. In contrast, breast reduction and mastopexy procedures demonstrated equivalent satisfaction with breasts compared with controls but may be associated with lower physical well-being. Such information can be used to improve the shared decision-making process for women who choose unilateral prosthetic BR.

“…This might be since an implant-based reconstructed breast is unable to undergo ptosis to match the contralateral breast. This fact has been investigated in a different study comparing PRO of patient who underwent contralateral augmentation to those who had no symmetry procedure [29]. Patients with contralateral augmentation had significantly higher scores for "satisfaction with breast" and "satisfaction with outcome".…”

“…Symmetrisation surgery is not usually required after local flap reconstruction, 16 as the excised breast volume is replaced. This is a potential advantage over mastectomy and reconstruction, where symmetrising procedures are commonly required, 28,29 with reported contralateral surgery rates up to 77% in 2-stage implant reconstructions. 30 In our study, one patient underwent a symmetrising procedure.…”
