Impact of Corona-Phobia on Attitudes and Acceptance Towards COVID-19 Vaccine Among Cancer Patients: a Single-Center Study

Abstract: Aim: This study aimed to assess the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) phobia and related factors on attitude towards COVID-19 vaccine in cancer patients. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 300 adult patients using a validated COVID-19 Phobia Scale (C19P-S) and related survey to determine the factors affecting vaccine acceptance between May–June 2021. Results: Regarding the COVID-19 vaccine willingness, 86.7% accepted vaccination, 6.3% were hesitant and 7% re… Show more

“…Although a majority of cancer patients such as those in our study are vaccinated, which is consistent with prior reports [ 29 , 30 , 32 , 41 , 42 , 43 ], cancer patients have been an under-represented group in vaccine clinical trials, especially ethnic minorities. Therefore, it may be justified for these patients to have safety concerns and skepticisms.…”

“…This concern is further amplified if a patient with COVID-19 is not only unvaccinated but also has comorbidities such as cancer, predisposing them to higher risk of morbidity and mortality. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy has been studied previously in cancer patients worldwide [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 32 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ] and in the United States [ 31 , 33 , 35 , 36 , 45 ], including multiple studies of ethnic minorities in the US [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ], but no known research exists specifically examining ethnic minority cancer patients and their views on the COVID-19 vaccine. This study helps address this gap in the knowledge by uniquely examining two different time-points of vaccination status 6-months post-initial survey, employing a vaccine knowledge score composite and exploring a brief educational intervention to raise patients’ awareness, to gain valuable insight into this distinctly disadvantaged population in the US.…”

“…The rate increased to 91% of participants who received their attending physician’s recommendation for vaccination [ 99 ]. Results from several other studies further support the notion that recommendations coming from a patient’s oncologist would be well received by cancer patients [ 97 , 100 ]. Therefore, it is imperative that all oncological providers are well informed of the most accurate and up-to-date recommendations regarding vaccination and to start discussions with their patients to address their concerns.…”

“…The psychological, psychosomatic, and economic sub-dimensions of the C19P-S and the total C19P-S scores of women were significantly higher than those of men. Single patients' C19P-S psychosomatic subgroup scores were sig-nificantly higher than those of married patients (17). In a study investigating coronaphobia risk factors in adult patients, female sex, being married, having a chronic illness, staying at home, and accompanying sleep disorders were associated with high coronaphobia scores (14).…”
