Impact of dental care in the prevention of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw: a single-center clinical experience

Abstract: In comparison with published ONJ rates and those extrapolated from the retrospective analysis, the observed ONJ rate in the prospective group was lower, suggesting that implementation of a preventive dental program may reduce the risk of ONJ in metastatic patients treated with i.v. BP therapy.

“…tooth extraction to dental/periodontal diseases and dental/periodontal diseases) is unquestionable, also when BP should be prescribed for non-cancer indications. Recently, other Italian authors [2] have underlined the necessity of increasing the knowledge and adequate reporting of the BRONJ phenomena by health professionals, and of improving the elaboration of effective BRONJ preventive protocols [52], in order to minimize as far as possible the severe adverse effects of such an efficacious medical treatment.…”

“…It is the investigators' opinion that patients unable to undertake preventive dental measures before bisphosphonate treatment still benefit from reaching and maintaining a stable oral condition during therapy because good oral health seems to minimize the risk of developing ONJ. 17 In the same year, Saad and colleagues 18 published a multicenter prospective trial involving 5723 patients, assessing ONJ incidence, risk factors, and outcomes in patients receiving bisphosphonates for metastatic bone disease. Tooth extraction (61.8%) was the predominant oral factor associated with the development of ONJ (1.6% of all patients).…”

“…El inicio del cuidado de la salud oral disminuirá la necesidad de tratamiento dental, y con ello, la incidencia de la ONM. Vandone et al, (2012), determinó que la disminución del riesgo era del 50%. Por tanto, se debe realizar un examen clínico y radiográfico, motivar y educar al paciente en materia de salud oral, realizar 214 Martínez Ferrero, M., Fernández-Tresguerres , I.
