Impact of Diet and Exercise Interventions on Cognition and Brain Health in Older Adults: A Narrative Review

Abstract: The ability to preserve cognitive function and protect brain structure from the effects of the aging process and neurodegenerative disease is the goal of non-pharmacologic, lifestyle interventions focused on brain health. This review examines, in turn, current diet and exercise intervention trends and the collective progress made toward understanding their impact on cognition and brain health. The diets covered in this review include the Mediterranean diet (MeDi), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)… Show more

“…The beneficial effects of resistance exercise and the Mediterranean diet on mental health and general well-being can be attributed to a series of complex mechanisms of action involving physiological, neurobiological, and psychological changes [ 49 , 50 ]. First, resistance exercises and the Mediterranean diet promote stress reduction by regulating the autonomic nervous system and decreasing levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress [ 51 , 52 ].…”

“…These treatments have a direct effect on the brain, as well as an indirect effect by improving overall metabolic health including adipokine profiles. The remodeling of adipokine profiles extend to lifestyle interventions such as diet and exercise, emphasizing both direct and indirect effects on neurological health [ 111 , 112 ]. Dietary choline in early life impacts cognitive function in a familial AD mouse model [ 113 ].…”

“…Appropriate physical exercise has systemic bene ts for the body [24][25][26] .It can signi cantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.Compared with moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), high-intensity interval training (HITT) can signi cantly improve cardiorespiratory health [27] , which is an effective preventive means against the development of atherosclerosis [28] . Therefore, exercise interventions have become an effective approach to improve atherosclerosis. Most recent studies have focused on the effects of exercise on the severity and composition of atherosclerotic plaques in cardiovascular diseases.…”
