Impact of digital dermatitis on locomotion and gait traits of beef cattle

Abstract: Digital dermatitis (DD) is an infectious skin disease and a major cause of lameness that significantly impacts cattle productivity and welfare. However, DD does not always result in lameness and lameness scoring systems are not specific to hoof pathologies. Digital dermatitis detection protocols could be improved by including gait traits most related to DD. The aims of this study were to (1) determine the association between DD M-stage (‘M” for Mortellaro), locomotion and gait traits: arched back (AB), asymmet… Show more

“…The locomotion score can be used to classify the condition of a cow based on how well it moves. 21,22 There was no significant difference in lameness (locomotion score >2) between the QASD and CZS groups at the end of the study period. This might be because some cows suffered from double soles, sole ulcers, sole haemorrhages (circumscribed) or white line disease, and both the QASD and CZS groups had new incidences of sole ulcers or white line disease at the end of the trial.…”

“…Few investigations have used locomotion scores to assess the impact of QASD footbaths. The locomotion score can be used to classify the condition of a cow based on how well it moves 21,22 . “…It was rst identi ed in dairy herds in Italy in seventies and has become endemic in dairy herds worldwide since then with variable prevalence being reported (21). Although DD was not always associated with altered locomotion, studies have found that cattle identi ed with DD lesions were 8 and 10 times more likely to be diagnosed as either lame or moderately to severely lame compared with cattle without lesions, respectively (22). DD was the most treated foot lesion by hoof care professionals in the USA (23).…”
