Impact of Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy on Sinonasal Quality of Life

Abstract: Analysis of our findings indicated that, in general, eDCR was well tolerated by patients and nasal symptom scores returned to baseline values within 30-90 days of surgery. The concomitant performance of septoplasty in the setting of asymptomatic septal deviation did not confer any long-term improvement in symptoms of nasal obstruction.

“…Miyake et al evaluated the impact of EDCR on sinonasal quality of life and reported that nasal symptom scores returned to baseline levels within 30 to 90 days following EDCR surgery. 16 Although many novel surgical techniques have been applied to bolster EDCR success rates, a number of factors can influence these rates. One challenge that can hamper EDCR procedures is the accurate localization of the lacrimal sac.…”

“…Increasingly, as a result, greater emphasis is being placed on measuring patients' perception of postoperative benefit when assessing the outcome of a particular surgical procedure. 3,8,9 There are a number of articles in the literature that focus on the measurement of quality-of-life (QOL) improvement after DCR. 1,3,8–11 The Lacrimal Symptom Questionnaire (Lac-Q) is a well-validated questionnaire developed by Mistry et al , 12 and focuses on assessing the improvement (or lack of improvement) of lacrimal symptomatology as well as the social impact after a DCR.…”

“…Miyake et al evaluated the impact of End-DCR on sinonasal quality of life using a disease-specific validated sinonasal outcomes test, and the authors reported that nasal symptom scores returned to baseline levels within 30 to 90 days of End-DCR surgery. 12 Surgeons who perform DCR using a stent consider the stent as a tool that helps keep the tract and the rhinostomy patent. To determine the relationship between the utilization of stents and DCR success, multiple studies have been performed.…”
