Impact of FDG PET/CT on detection of synchronous and metachronous malignancies and clinical management in patients with multiple primary cancers

Abstract: Multiple primary cancers are usually defined as primary malignant tumors of different histological origins in one person. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of patients diagnosed with multiple primary cancers. The study aims to evaluate the role of PET/CT in detecting second primary and subsequent tumors as well as to demonstrate the influence on the treatment management in patients with histologically proven synchronous or metachronous tumors. Fifty patients with clinically proven at least one… Show more

“…The diagnosis and treatment of MPCs mostly rely on the treatment experience of the clinical, pathological, and imaging physicians. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography is effective in identifying MPCs, which helps in the early identification and management of MPCs 47 . Several studies have shown that molecular diagnostics have promising applications in the diagnosis of DPCs.…”

“…The presence of synchronous and metachronous malignancies in adult patients with known primary malignancy is not uncommon. Early and accurate detection of these synchronous and metachronous malignancies is important for clinical managements including appropriate treatment strategies [3]. This study aims to evaluate the frequency of incidental suspicious lesions of adult cancer patients detected by 18 F-FDG PET/CT scans done for staging or restaging.…”

“…В последнее время отмечается увеличение числа пациентов с первично-множественными злокачественными опухолями, имеющими разную гистологическую структуру и поражающими один или несколько органов. Наиболее распространены случаи двух первичных злокачественных новообразований, тогда как случаи большей множественности злокачественных опухолей составляют менее 0,5 % [1][2][3].…”
