Impact of Flax and Basalt Fibre Reinforcement on Selected Properties of Geopolymer Composites

Abstract: The submitted paper deals with the physical and mechanical properties of geopolymer composite materials reinforced with natural fibres. For this study, we aimed to develop a geopolymer composite reinforced with long flax fibres, which were implemented in the geopolymer in the form of a nonwoven fabric that reinforced the structure of the geopolymer over the entire thickness of the board. In order to compare the properties of the developed composite with natural fibres, a geopolymer without fibres and a geopoly… Show more

“…The flax fibers in foamed geopolymers were only investigated as an addition to long fibers [36]. The results show the positive effect of the addition to flax fibers on impact bending and flexural strength [38].…”

“…The interest in materials reinforced with natural fibers is growing because it is possible to obtain materials with good mechanical properties, low density and low cost. In addition, natural fibers are biodegradable, renewable and promote sustainability [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ], which is increasingly important currently. These fibers could replace synthetic fibers in certain applications, since synthetic fibers leave a greater environmental footprint.…”

“…The mechanism of reinforcement could be related to the kind of flax fibres used [18,26]. A lot of advantages could lead to the application of long flax fibres or flax fabric as reinforcement [27,28].…”
