Impact of glycosylation on the unimpaired functions of the sperm

Abstract: One of the key factors of early development is the specification of competence between the oocyte and the sperm, which occurs during gametogenesis. However, the starting point, growth, and maturation for acquiring competence during spermatogenesis and oogenesis in mammals are very different. Spermatogenesis includes spermiogenesis, but such a metamorphosis is not observed during oogenesis. Glycosylation, a ubiquitous modification, is a preliminary requisite for distribution of the structural and functional com… Show more

“…Glycosylation, the addition of a sugar moiety to a protein, plays an important role in sperm maturation, function, and fertilisation [ 13 ]. During spermatogenesis, glycosylation ensures the correct distribution of proteins to their structural and functional compartments, and in the epididymis, glycosylation is involved in the maturation of spermatozoa [ 14 ]. After ejaculation, glycoproteins play important roles in the interaction between gametes at the zona pellucida and at the oolemma, ensuring adherence and binding of the two gametes [ 12 , 15 ].…”

“…CatSper glycoproteins form sperm-specific, voltage-gated Ca 2+ channels localised along the membrane of the sperm flagella. Triggering this channel can increase the probability of sperm–egg binding [ 11 , 12 ].…”

“…CatSper glycoproteins form the sperm-specific voltage-gated Ca 2+ channels localized along the membrane of the sperm flagella. The triggering of this channel can increase the probability of sperm-egg binding (11,12). Consequently, epigenetic modification plays an important role in the correct expression of functional genes during spermiogenesis.…”
