Impact of Handgrip Strength on Clinical Outcomes after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

Abstract: Aim: The relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) and clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has not yet been thoroughly investigated. Methods: This was a single-center, observational study. A total of 469 patients who underwent PCI and whose periprocedural HGS was measured were included. Patients were divided into two groups: the low HGS group (men, <28 kg; women, <18 kg) and the high HGS group (men, ≥ 28 kg; women, ≥ 18 kg). The primary outcome was the composite endpoint of all-c… Show more

“…Following comprehensive evaluations of the full texts of 21 studies, 13 were excluded based on the rationales outlined in Figure S1 . Consequently, eight studies [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ] were deemed suitable for the subsequent meta‐analysis.…”

“…Overall, eight studies, including five prospective cohort studies [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ], two retrospective cohort studies [ 20 , 22 ], and one post‐hoc analysis of clinical trial [ 21 ], were included in the meta‐analysis. The characteristic of the studies are summarized in Table 1 .…”

“…Malnutrition is independently associated with the development and progression of acute coronary syndrome 42) . Moreover, patients undergoing PCI with that the level of SA was negatively correlated with in-hospital mortality among patients with STEMI 39,40) . Low SA is a simple indicator that has been widely used as a quantitative measure of malnutrition.…”

“…The latter are relevant metrics to assess overall health and predict outcomes and, as such, should be part of a multidimensional evaluation [ 21 , 22 ]. Sarcopenia—the loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength and function [ 23 ]—is a powerful predictor of CVD progression, falls, reduced quality of life, and death in patients with CVD [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The presence of sarcopenia can be explored by the handgrip strength test and estimation of lean body mass through imaging or anthropometric measures.…”
